New year resolutions never work out. Instead I’m just leaving some rules I’ve been trying to live by recently and which I want to concentrate on over the next 12 months.
- Doing things because we ‘should’ does not make us good people.
- Passion is everything. If an opportunity comes up which makes us say ‘hell yeah’ then we take it, otherwise we don’t bother.
- Learning is important, but doing is better. A restricted diet of information leads to more time to create.
- Time spent on the four areas of me, family, community and work should be measured. Not to ensure an equal share, but to understand and guide our time better.
- People have motives. Seek help but be aware what is expected in return.
- Long-term goals are unrealistic and liable to change, concentrate on medium-term goals and the rest will fall into place.
- Process is overrated. Best practises are not always valid. Take advice but make your own way in life.
- To master something takes 1000 hours. 2 hours a week for 12 months however is 100 hours, which is more than enough to become great at something.
